A Flower for My Hair

I'll be wearing a chapel length veil for our ceremony, but I'm sure I'll be sick of it by the time we're done with pictures, so I wanted a hair flower for the reception. I know there are multiple tutorials out there for DIY hair flowers, so I won't post another in depth one. I basically followed the tutorial Penga from Convention of a Wedding posted a few days ago, and it was super easy!

The only materials you need are a flower (I used a white rose from Michaels), fake pearls or beads, a hair clip, and a hot glue gun.

I used the same rose Penga used and took it apart the same way:

I took out all of the plastic pieces and I didn't use the top two layers of petals because it made the flower really thick. I glued the rest of the petals together, and then added a few pearls to the middle. I used four larger pearls and one smaller one in the middle from this package I found at Michaels:

And here it is:

(I apologize for the crappy pictures - I'll take better ones once I have a clip for it!)

I still need to buy a clip, so I wasn't able to try it in my hair yet, but I think it'll be perfect! Here's a cost breakdown:
Silk rose - $1.99
Package of pearls - $2.99 (rest of package can be used for other projects)
Hair clip - Probably $2 or less

Total: $7 or a little less

That totally beats the insanely overpriced hair flowers at bridal salons AND it only took about 5 minutes!

Are you wearing a hair flower? If so, did you go the DIY route or did you purchase it?

  4. Well done! Like a lot of people, I'll be trying the DIY route first because, like you said, it's way, way, way more cost effective. But if I can't get a good enough result, I'll probably end up buying one online. Etsy has some pretty good prices, so hopefully it won't break the bank.

  9. I really like that! I've seriously considered not even wearing a veil myself--outside for all the photos and the ceremony I think it will drive me crazy. Plus, I just don't think I'm a veil bride. I tried on a few and it just didn't do it for me. But I love cathedral length veils--so dramatic and I can't wait to see what yours looks like. I do plan to make my own flower(s)--probably two smaller ones bunched together made of a creamy colored felt or something. I know it sounds a little silly, but I have a "vision" ;)

  11. I have a girlfriend who makes these and sells them as a hobby. I am hoping she will make one for me to wear at the reception when I change into my second gown :)
