To Look or Not to Look

Growing up, and even at the start of my wedding planning, I was sure I would follow tradition and not see my groom until the ceremony when I walked down the aisle. I still think that's so incredibly romantic, but I just don't see how it's feasible if I want fun pictures with our bridal party and I don't want our guests waiting for an hour for us at the reception site. But for those of you not doing a "first look," but who want to have an intimate moment together before the ceremony, how cute are these pictures?! I think an "almost first look" is such a cute alternative:

We've decided on doing an actual 'first look' with us and the photographer. I know it will still be an incredibly romantic (and emotional!) moment, and I'm hoping it might keep me from crying in our ceremony as much as I would've if I saw him for the first time at the altar. I'm also hoping that it will ensure that we'll have a picture of David's face when he sees me. I think it would be much easier to get one this way, rather than as I'm walking down the aisle. I thought I might have to almost talk my mom into it, but she's totally on board, especially after seeing pictures like these:

And the pictures from our photographer:

I can't wait to see the look on David's face when he sees me for the first time. I've told him-multiple times-that I really hope he cries. Ha, no pressure or anything, right? I'm so glad that we'll have great pictures of this incredible moment. And we'll still get to take the fun pictures bridal party pictures that I want so badly afterwards. (I'll be posting more of my inspiration pictures soon!)

Did you decide to do a "first look"? What are/were your reasons? And do you plan on it being just the two of you and your photographer or are you going to have family and bridal party members there to share it with you?

  1. Well, let me be the first to comment. :) Ryan and I saw each other before the ceremony. We saw each other in the sanctuary, alone (with the photog). It was wonderful! We were so happy to see each other!! It also kept me from crying at all during the ceremony (our bridesmaids and groomsmen, yes groomsmen, cried tho!). I wouldn't have changed those moments alone at all!! And like you said, it was nice to take pictures with everyone beforehand so the guests didn't have to wait. I think you made a great choice!

  2. Traditionally, I prefer the first look at the altar, so we ALL cry - but at our wedding, the pictures took so long after the ceremony that by the time we got to the reception, most of the food was gone! And the pictures weren't that good either!

  3. We are doing the First Look for a couple of the same reasons as well... One of my great friends has a pic of her and her now husband who didn't want to do a first look go back to back against a door holding hands. It's so cute but it was before they saw eachother at the ceremony!

  4. I was having the same debate as well but I think we've decided on the first look. I think it will be such a fantastic and intimate moment. I'm hoping my fiance cries as well!!

  5. Found you over at weddingbee. We did a first look at our wedding. First of all, the ceremony was starting at 6 so afterward we wouldn't really have much daylight for pictures and we knew that we would be hungry (well I would be). It didn't make seeing each other down the aisle any less emotional or romantic and it made the day less stressful!

  6. I love Mojito's idea. I think its a cute way to do both. I think that my Mr. will be amazing in calming my nerves about the wedding (even if he can't see me, I know I feel beautiful when he says it) but I love the traditional first look at the alter.
    Love it!

  7. @ Hannah - You'll have to be sure you get some awesome pictures like the first 2 I posted of the 'almost' first look. I'm sure that will be such a special moment!
